This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.
We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.
A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
